In the photographer’s (@alanrochephoto) queue today is a group of Pomeranian (as in what is presently Germany not—much to Alan’s chagrin—the fluffy dog breed) riksdalers from the mid 17th century.

The hoard (IGCH 738) was purchased by the ANS in 1956, but the coins were never accessioned or catalogued. Peter van Alfen has now finished cataloging the coins and Alan Roche has photographed them. Van Alfen’s study of the hoard will appear in the forthcoming Festschrift in honor of William Metcalf.

A couple of visitors stopped by the ANS because one of them was curious about his ancestor, the 16th century medalist Antonio Abondio. The second image is one of Abondio's medals in our collection depicting the renaissance architect Pietro Ferrabosco. (Italy, 1575 | 1940.100.1242)
